Go the extra Mile for GOAL on St Stephen's Day
The meeting point for the Derry GOAL-Mile will be Sainsbury's Car Park, Strand Road on Tuesday December 26th at 12 noon. Just turn up on the day – with a handful of loose change to throw in the collection bucket before making your way over the Peace Bridge to Ebrington Square and back again to finish at Sainsbury's.

In the midst of all the mad rushing around to pick up last minute gifts or 'must haves' for Christmas dinner, just take a minute or two to think of how lucky you are to have the luxury of that kind of stress.

Millions of people around the world are not so lucky. As an international humanitarian charity, GOAL is committed to working with the poorest of the poor. In the past year, Goal has continued to respond to crises in Ethiopia, South Sudan and Syrain and has also began operations in Iraq.

The conflict in Syria alone has led to the internal displacement of families with millions of people in urgent need of humanitarian assistance. Millions of others are refugees in neighbouring countries with not much more than the clothes on their backs. What would they give to be getting stressed over Christmas?

Local people are invited to put their best foot forward on St Stephen's Day next Tuesday 26th December in a show of support for GOAL's work.

The annual GOAL Mile which is held in towns and villages throughout Ireland over the Christmas period is one of the charity's flagship events aimed at raising much needed funds as well as awareness of charity's humanitarian work.

It has been running in Ireland for over 30 years and getting involved is now a Christmas tradition for many local families. GOAL Miles are held at over 140 venues around the country so when you walk along the River Foyle next Monday, you'll be walking in solidarity for the Syrian refugee and upwards of 30,000 other participants doing the GOAL mile the length and breadth of Ireland.

The first GOAL mile in Derry was organised by Sister Bernadine, who at the time was principal of Nazareth House PS. Sister Bernardine has since retired and is living in Sligo but she says she is delighted that local people have taken on the challenge of organising the GOAL Mile and making it a popular family Christmas tradition in Derry.
