Vocations Week 2019 - Monday - Single Life

Monday 25th February Single life

The Synod reflected on the situation of people who live as "singles", recognizing that this term can indicate a great variety of circumstances. The single state can have many causes, voluntary or involuntary, and can depend on cultural, religious and social factors. It can therefore express a very broad range of life choices. The Church recognizes that this state, lived in a spirit of faith and gift, can be one of the many roads by which the grace of baptism is realized and a person advances towards the holiness to which are all called.

Final Document of the Synod of Bishops on Young People, Faith and Vocational Discernment (90.)

Scripture

Mk 9: Everything is possible for anyone who has faith. Immediately the father of the boy cried out, 'I do have faith. Help the little faith I have.

Intercessions

That all those living out their vocations in Christ will take heart that Lord our God calls them by name to follow along the path of discipleship, Lord hear us.

For all called to be single men and women, that they will have confidence in Jesus Christ, who calls them each to reveal God's love for the world through their words and actions, Lord hear us.

Reflections

Being a disciple means being constantly ready to bring the love of Jesus to others, and this can happen unexpectedly and in any place: on the street, in a city square, during work, on a journey.

—Evangelii Gaudium, "The Joy of the Gospel" (127.)

God calls you to make definitive choices, and He has a plan for each of you: To discover that plan and to respond to your vocation is to move toward personal fulfilment.

—Pope Francis, 2013 World Youth Day

Prayer

Lord, I know you love me and have great plans for me. But sometimes I am overwhelmed by the thought of my future. Show me how to walk forward one day at a time. May I take heart while I search openly for what it is you want me to do with my life. Inspire in me wisdom and understanding to see your vision for my life and respond with openness to whatever you call me to be. Show me your way Lord!2
