Sunday of the Word of God, 21 January 2024

"Devoting a specific Sunday of the liturgical year to the word of God can enable the Church to experience anew how the risen Lord opens up for us the treasury of his word and enables us to proclaim its unfathomable riches before the world." Pope Francis - 'Aperuit Illis'

On 30 September 2019, Pope Francis, by the Motu Proprio Aperuit Illis declared the Third Sunday of Ordinary Time to be the Sunday of the Word of God.

This year the Sunday of the Word of God falls on 21 January. It is devoted to the celebration, study and dissemination of the word of God.

Christian meditation, led by the Spirit, leads us to this dialogue with Jesus.
There is no page of the Gospel in which there is no place for us. For us Christians,
meditating is a way to encounter Jesus.

Prayers

On this Sunday of the Word of God, we bring our prayers to God the Father and Creator of all Words through Jesus the Incarnate Word in the power of the Holy Spirit:

For the Church, who hears and meditates on the Word of God:

that love of God and neighbour may direct all of our decisions and our actions.

For all in positions of authority in society:

that in hearing the Word of God, they avoid the paths of pride, arrogance and self-seeking,

and instead seek to increase respect and protection for every human life.

For the nations of the world,

especially those places where the Word of God was first heard and preached:

that God will bring His power and healing into the tragedies and wounds of our history

so that all people may grow in peace, justice, compassion and hope for one another.

For families and homes:

that the Word of God will inspire loving interactions, respectful listening, tender encouragement and compassionate caring.

For all who are called to preach the Word of God,

especially in the ways of priesthood and consecrated life:

that they may hear God's call and have freedom of heart to respond.

For those who share in the ministry of the Word,

especially as Catechists, Lectors and Deacons:

that in their reflection on God's Word, they will be open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit to serve God's people by charity, teaching and active witness.

For all who are sick:

that God's Word will bring them strength in body, mind and spirit.

For the school communities of our diocese as we begin Catholic Schools' Week:

that the Word of God will inspire all learning, formation and education

for pupils, parents, families and staff.

For those whose hearts are hardened:

that the Word of God will touch hearts, bringing us from rudeness and ridicule

to compassionate care and respect for one another.

For those who have died, especially those who first shared God's Word with us:

that God will grant them the fulness of His promised Word, eternal rest on high.
