As the Church prepares for Vocations Sunday on 26 April, we share a short video reflection from Fr Pat O'Hagan, Vocations Director for the Diocese of Derry. In it, Fr Pat speaks simply and honestly about how he first sensed a call to priesthood — and the journey that followed.
Fr Pat's story begins in a very ordinary place — as a young student in his final year at school, with clear plans for his future. Priesthood was not part of that plan. Yet, in the middle of everyday life, something unexpected stirred.
He describes it as a quiet but persistent thought: "Why don't you consider becoming a priest?"
That moment didn't lead to an instant decision. Like many who experience a vocation, there was hesitation, questioning, and a real sense of wrestling with the idea. But it also led to a conversation — first with a school chaplain, then with others who could help him listen more closely to what God might be asking.
That willingness to speak, to listen, and to take a next step eventually led Fr Pat to seminary and, in time, to ordination in 1984.
Looking back now, after many years of priesthood, he speaks with gratitude — not only for his own calling, but for the privilege of accompanying others who are asking similar questions today.
As Vocations Director, he meets men from many different walks of life — some still at school, others in work or further along in life — each carrying the same quiet question: "What is God asking of me?"
An Invitation
Vocations Sunday is an invitation to pause and listen.
For some, that may simply mean praying for vocations to the priesthood and religious life.
For others, it may mean taking seriously a question that has been quietly present for some time.
